[China Packaging News] researchers from Livingston group expressed new opinions on membrane technology, paving the way for future research and development and industrial applications

ultra thin polyamide nano filter, also known as membrane, is a very thin filter, which is composed of polyamide film and its supporting layer

nano filters are an important part of the water purification process, such as desalting, filtering impurities and producing clean drinking water. Although they have been used in industry for decades, few people have studied their properties and functions. The Livingston group at Imperial College London recently published an article on advanced materials, focusing on this issue

improve the industrial seawater desalination process

according to the new research funded by BP international advanced materials center (bp-icam) (funded by US $100million), it is studying the basic science of membrane, in order to improve the efficiency of the seawater desalination process in the Nearshore Area, reduce the energy use in oil exploitation, and thus improve the efficiency of the whole process

generally, the oil and gas industry uses nano filters on offshore drilling platforms to remove salt from seawater, so low salinity water can be pumped into oil reservoirs to extract oil reserves. Relevant studies have shown, however, that compared with brine, the use of low salinity seawater can increase production, so the oil and gas industry has also begun to turn to improving the process of seawater desalination

Dale Williams, senior process engineer of British Petroleum Company (BP), explained: "for our upstream business, we need to use a large amount of water to ensure the production of oil and natural gas. Usually, the water used is seawater, so the seawater must be treated before it can be injected into the well. If most of the salt in the solution is removed, more oil can be washed away from the rock surface."

sheet Handa, deputy director of bp-icam, added: "This kind of membrane gives us the opportunity to obtain seawater and the low salinity water we need, which can not only recover more oil, but also maximize our operation efficiency. But the premise is that we must really understand the basic composition and working principle of polyamide membrane. At present, the bp-icam research of Professor Livingston group is aimed at this problem, and the information is transmitted to BP in time.
